About the Lures

Hookem lures are the first patented fishing lures that use glass instead of lead as its weight. Odds are you never fished with such a lure. So lets tell you a little about them.

Our lures are made right here in East Tennessee. We make up each lure by hand. A tremendous amount of time and care is taken in making each one to make sure it is done just right.

Each lure is unique in its own way, from the color of the glass and the color of the eyes to the reflective coating on back. Each lure reflects a beautiful array of color that simply put "fish have never seen".

So what are the advantages to a glass lure?

  • Eco-Friendly - No poisonous toxins like those found in lead. There are no adverse effects to the environment or wildlife.
  • Economical - Glass is far less expensive than other lead-free alternatives like tungsten, bismuth and others on the market.
  • Colors - Our glass lures provide a large variety of different colors and designs that make combinations appealing to all sorts of fish.
  • Weight - They are lighter than lead resulting in a slower fall. See F.A.Q below.
  • Sizes - Our glass lures range is a variety of sizes and shapes that appeal to all types of fish.

The examples to the right are what you can do with them and some are the specialty lures that are going to be coming very soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Since these are glass, what happens when these hit a rock or hard surface?

Contrary to what you might think, the glass head lures are extremely durable. They are "solid" glass. They can withstand rocks and just about any other hard surface that they are cast onto or that may hit under the surface.

What are the weights?

Comparing them to lead is like comparing "apples to oranges". The glass head lures are larger but weigh considerably less than a lead head lure which may be half the size. For instance, the small glass lure is approximately 1/10 ounce. The medium is right at 1/4 of an ounce and the large is 1/2 ounce.

What is the biggest difference between a glass head lure and a lead head lure?

The biggest difference that you will feel right away is the weight comparison. The glass head lure will have a slower, far more appealing as it sinks gently through the water. As it travels, the glass head has the tendency to have a slight wiggle to it that enhances the sparkle even more.

What colors work best for bass, walleye, crappie, etc.?

There are so many different variables that need to be taken into consideration. It depends on condition of the water, weather, day or night, etc. There are websites with articles that provide tips regarding what colors seem to work for different fish. Below are a few. Each opens in a new window.

What kind of tails can be used?

These lures are basically jig heads. You can put any type of tail or grub you wish on it just like a lead jig. If one particular tail doesn't seem to be doing the job, take it off and try another. You might even add a spinner if you desire. As you can see from the image above, the combinations are endless.
